Microneedling Pre And Post Care Guide

Microneedling is an effective treatment for improving skin texture and addressing various concerns like acne scars, wrinkles, and large pores. The procedure uses tiny needles to stimulate collagen production in the skin, leading to smoother and more youthful-looking skin over time. However, proper care before and after the treatment is crucial for achieving the best results. By following microneedling pre and post care instructions, you can maximize the benefits and minimize potential side effects.

Pre-Microneedling Care

The right preparation before your microneedling skin treatment can help enhance the procedure’s effectiveness and reduce any possible discomfort. Here are the key steps to follow:

Avoid Certain Skincare Products

To ensure your skin is ready for the treatment, stop using products that could increase sensitivity. This includes retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), exfoliating masks, and benzoyl peroxide. These ingredients can make your skin more vulnerable to irritation, so avoid them for about 5-7 days before the procedure. Additionally, refrain from using topical antibiotics or any other products that might cause irritation.

Avoid Accutane

If you have been using Accutane (isotretinoin), it is recommended that you stop using it for at least 6 months before the treatment. Accutane can make the skin more sensitive, and microneedling may exacerbate the risk of scarring or irritation if used too soon after the medication.

Avoid Sun Exposure and Tanning

Microneedling can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. For optimal results, it is recommended to refrain from unprotected sun exposure or tanning for at least two weeks before the treatment. Sunburned skin is more delicate and can complicate the healing process. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher during the weeks leading up to your treatment.

No Hair Removal Treatments

Do not use depilatory creams, waxing, or electrolysis on the treatment area for about a week before the procedure. This will prevent unnecessary irritation and ensure the skin is in the best condition possible for microneedling.

No Anti-Inflammatory Medications

Certain medications, such as ibuprofen, Motrin, and Advil, can interfere with the natural inflammatory response that is necessary for the skin's rejuvenation. Stop taking these medications at least 3 days before your appointment to avoid complications.

Pre-Treatment Skin Care

For the best results, your practitioner may recommend pre-treatment skincare. This could include using hydrating products and gentle exfoliants that prepare your skin for the microneedling session. A skincare regimen that focuses on skin health can help your skin respond better to the procedure and ensure longer-lasting results.

Day of Treatment

On the day of your microneedling treatment, make sure your skin is free of makeup, lotion, sunscreen, or any other products. Your face should be clean before the procedure begins. If you have any medical changes or are taking new medications, inform your provider. Topical lidocaine is usually applied to numb the skin, making the procedure more comfortable.

Post-Microneedling Care

After your microneedling skin treatment, your skin will need proper care to maximize results and minimize any adverse reactions. Here is what you need to know:

Immediate Aftercare

Immediately after the procedure, a hyaluronic acid mask will be applied to your skin to help calm it down and lock in moisture. Your skin may feel tight, dry, and sensitive to the touch, which is normal. It may resemble the feeling of a mild sunburn. Avoid any inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or Motrin for the next week as they could interfere with your skin’s natural healing process.

Avoid Sun Exposure

For at least 2 weeks after your microneedling treatment, avoid sun exposure and tanning beds. The new skin cells are sensitive and can burn easily. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every day, and reapply every 2 hours when exposed to sunlight. When possible, wear a hat for added protection.

Gentle Cleansing and Moisturizing

For the first few days, use a gentle cleanser to wash your face. Avoid harsh scrubbing, and only use your hands to apply the cleanser. Pat your skin dry with a clean towel and use a moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated. Reapply the moisturizer regularly to prevent the skin from drying out.

Post-Treatment Skin Care Products

For the first 24 hours after your microneedling treatment, you should avoid wearing makeup or applying any skincare products other than those recommended by your provider. After this initial period, you can use products that are gentle and hydrating, such as those containing peptides or growth factors. Avoid using products with exfoliating ingredients or strong actives until your skin has fully healed.

Avoid Sweat-Inducing Activities

For the first 24 to 48 hours after your treatment, avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, hot tubs, or anything that could cause excessive sweating. Sweating can irritate the skin and interfere with the healing process, so it is best to avoid these activities while the skin is still in the healing phase.
